Merseyside Scouts provides life changing adventure to over 7500 young people across 140 communities in Knowsley, Liverpool, St. Helens and Wirral through our team of over 2000 adult volunteers.

Our Digital Services team is made up of a small number of people that maintain and develop a variety of systems that are used across our county, including at our activity centre, Tawd Vale Adventure Centre.

About the role

We’re looking to expand our existing team to increase our capacity to make changes and to reduce the number of dependencies we have on individuals. We are lining up a number of large, exciting and ambitious projects. You’ll work closely with our existing team to help shape and build the future of our tools and platforms.

Here are some of the systems we manage:

  • Microsoft 365 platform for over 400 volunteers within our county team, including our intranet within SharePoint
  • A fleet of InTune managed Windows and iOS devices
  • A Laravel application for bespoke developments, when the need arises
  • A number of virtual machines and a managed database within Azure to host websites for both Merseyside Scouts and Tawd Vale Adventure Centre
  • UniFi Network to manage our networking within our office and at Tawd Vale Adventure Centre

Here are a few projects that our team have worked on recently and, if successful, examples of work you might do too:

  • Migrating our legacy VOIP system to Microsoft 365 voice, including implementing call routing and training our teams
  • Deploying satelitte internet and expanding our WiFi network at Tawd Vale Adventure Centre to provide our team with access to a new digital-first booking management system
  • Building a simple tool to help our volunteers to generate on-brand signatures easily
  • Configuring and launching our Jira Service Management portal to allow our teams to access the support that they need more easily
  • Onboarding new members of #TeamMerseyside with Microsoft 365 logins and supporting line managers with inductions to our systems
  • Bringing together data from across multiple sources to provide comprehensive reporting to our trustees and leadership teams through PowerBI
  • Fixing a printer. Or two. Or three…

About you

We’re looking for someone that will help us continue to maintain and develop our systems; you might be a UI/UX designer, an accessibility expert, a back-end developer, a front-end developer, a systems administrator, a support rep, a combination of the above or something we’ve missed entirely! You may also be someone who just loves technology and wants to learn.

More important than specific technical skills though is that you’re a strong problem solver who loves to learn – we’re not experts in everything and we don’t expect you to be either. If you’re the go-to person within your family to fix a smart phone, you’ll probably be a good fit within our team. You have the ability to work both independently and as part of a wider team.

You’re comfortable working in the open, knowing that any contributions you make are likely to be very visible to hundreds of people. You are aware that your contributions will remain in use for years to come, and that many people will share the burden of maintenance.

The roles of our existing team members are fairly loose. Everyone chips in to what they can, whenever they can. We have go-to people for certain areas, but there are no restrictions to where you can contribute – we want you to enjoy what you’re doing and we believe that the freedom to choose where you invest your time is important.

You may not be a member of Scouts just yet. If you’re not, we’ll guide you through the steps to joining as part of bringing you into our team. Whilst we’d love someone to join us within Merseyside, we are open to talking to those that are further afield and enthuiastic to support us remotely.

Make sure teams across the County:

  • Work well on their own (and together).
  • Are inclusive and reflect the demographics of their local area.
  • Have the resources, skills, and enthusiasm, to deliver the Scouts strategy
  • Volunteers in the County’s teams have the skills and experience to fulfil their safety and safeguarding responsibilities, including by keeping up to date with changes, and being aware of safety and safeguarding concerns within the County.
  • Volunteers are aware of Our Volunteering Culture, reflect on it, commit to it, and apply it in their teams.
