Merseyside has a fantastic coastline featuring views of North Wales in the South, The famous Liverpool Skyline, right through to Southport in the North. Its no surprise then that Water Activities for a major part of Scout Programmes throughout the County.

This page should give some valuable information for Groups and Units planning to take part in Water Activities, we hope you find this page useful.

What Water Activities are Available?

There are many different Water Based Activities Scouts can take part in across the County, dependant on equipment available at each location activites available include:

  • Dingy Sailing
  • Kayaking/Canoeing
  • Bell Boating
  • Dragon Boating
  • Raft Building
  • Power Boating
  • Wind Surfing
  • Pulling/Rowing

Where Can we Take Part in Water Activites?

Across the County there are many Sea Scout Groups who often run Water Activity Sessions for other local groups for minimal cost, speak to your DC for contact details of your nearest Sea Scout Group.

Alternatively there are also the following groups/centres you can visit who have qualified instructors available to run water Activities on your behalf.

Waterside Lodge - Southport

A purpose built centre opened in 1999 on the edge of the Southport Marine Lake. The centre has full launching facilities for all types of craft on a 200 yard waterfront. The accommodation includes: bunkrooms sleeping 44 in four separate rooms, male, female and disabled toilets and showers, separate leaders’ facilities, two fully fitted kitchens (equipped for 100 each), lift, dining/games room and a function room. There is disabled access and extensive craft storage and servicing facilities. The Centre is a ‘Certified Location’ of the Camping and Caravan Club.

There is a good range of kayaks, open canoes, dinghies, bell boats and dragon boats and power (safety) boats – with materials for rafting and pioneering. Controlled camping is permitted in the grounds.

Qualified instructors are available (with prior arrangement) or visiting groups may use own instructors on production of relevant certification/qualification.

Activities Available include:

  • Canoeing (Canadian and Kayak)
    Waterside Lodge offers a range of activities from taster sessions to B.C.U. 1* and 2* certification.
    Canoe Polo is offered throughout the year with winter sessions in an indoor pool.
  • Dinghy Sailing
    Many R.Y.A. courses are available – from ‘Start Sailing’ to ‘Racing’, ‘Multihull with spinnakers’ and the ‘Youth Sailing Scheme’ levels 1 – 4, and others
  • Bell Boating
    Leisure or ‘fun’ sessions are available.
    A ‘Bell Boat Helm’ Course is offered to those preparing to lead their own activity.
  • Dragon Boating
    Fun sessions and racing are available.
  • Rafting
    Waterside Lodge has a good supply of spars, ropes and barrels for improvised rafting. Instructors can be provided though groups may find it more convenient to use their own leaders.
  • Power Boating
    Power Boating is offered solely as a safety measure when other craft are on the water.
    R.Y.A. Courses available are: Power Boating Levels 1 & 2 and Safety Boat.

Wirral Guide & Canoe Association

The primary aim of this Association is the promote the sport of canoeing within the Scout and Guide Associations. This has always including personal British Canoe Union based star awards and coaching awards.

The success of the Association has been demonstrated over the years by the increased number of groups getting on the water and or now having their own BCU qualified coaches. This is now particularly evident in Girl Guiding in Wirral as the number of coaches has doubled. Due to the expansion of disciplines, from grants for sea kayaks and open boats, membership of the Association now includes Scouters and Guiders from across the whole of Merseyside.

Activities Available include:

  • Group Taster sessions in kayak, open boats and bellboats
  • Paddlepower Start, Passport and Discover
  • BCU One and Two Star Awards
  • Three BCU Star Awards in Flat Water and Moving Water Kayak
  • Three BCU Star Awards in Flat Water and Moving Water Open Boat
  • Three and Four BCU Star Awards in Sea Kayak
  • Scout and Guide Canoeing Badges
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award Expeditions - Bronze, Silver and Gold on foot and water
  • Level 1 and 2 BCU Coaching Awards
  • Foundation Rescue and Safety Test
  • BCU Bellboat Helm Courses
  • 4 and 8 hour First Aid Courses
