Fairfield 'B' Come Out On Top The fourth annual Merseyside Five-A-Side Football Competition took place at Power League (The Pitz), Kirkdale, Liverpool on Saturday 28th June. The event was poorly supported with only seven teams from five districts participating. The teams were split into two leagues with the top two going through to the semi final, in what ended up being a very competitive competition. In Group B the 10th St.Helens needed a bag full of goals to qualify for the semi-finals and also relying on Fairfield 'B' defeating 5th Formby. Miraculously both happened and they qualified as Group B runners up to meet their rivals 5th St Helens who had qualified as winners of Group A on goal difference. This semi final produced a very evenly matched contest which was eventually decided on penalties with 5th St Helens being the victors. The other semi final was between Fairfield 'B' who had remained unbeaten in their group winning all three matches and Crosby who had only lost out on goal difference in Group A. In the end it was a comfortable 3-0 victory for Fairfield 'B'. The final produced an enthralling contest with end to end goalmouth action. The 5th St Helens seemed to have gained the upper hand when they took an early lead but Fairfield kept on battling and deservedly equalised. In the latter stages Fairfield scored two further goals without reply and ran out deserved winners by three goals to one. Thanks to all leaders who helped referee the matches and lets hope for a better turnout next year.
