The Beavan Challenge

Who is this event for?

For 30 years the Challenge has represented an annual opportunity for Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Guides, Ranger Guides and their supporters to join together in sporting competition and meet for a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

When is this year's Challenge?

This year the Beavan Challenge will take place over the weekend of the 5th - 7thOctober 2012, The Closing Date for entries is 1st September 2012

The Challenge Elements

All of the events will be based around the site area, which will only require support teams to run your campsite, the events that form part of the challenge are:

  • Hiking/Orienteering
  • Canoeing
  • Air Rifle Shooting
  • First Aid
  • Assault Course
  • Mountain Biking Course

Two sessions will be completed on the Saturday and One on Sunday. Points will be awarded on a Team basis. Every competitor that completes the Challenge will receive a certificate.

How big is a team?

Teams are made up of 3 who must all come from one of the following categories:

  • Junior Scouts - Under 12½  (born after 31st Dec 1995)
  • Senior Scouts - Over  12½
  • Explorer Scouts - 14 – 18th Birthday
  • Guides - under 15
  • Ranger Guides - over 15

You can enter as many teams as you wish in any of the categories.

Please ensure you have read the full rules below before entering.

The presentation of Trophies and Certificates will conclude the Event, as usual, around 14:30 on the Sunday.

Rules

The Challenge will be for Teams of 3, and all team members should be in one of the age categories below:
Junior Scouts (Aged U12½) (Born after 1.4.1999 and before 1.4.2001)
Senior Scouts (Aged 12½ - 14 ½)
Explorers (Aged 14-18)
You can enter as many teams as you wish in any of the categories.
ALL competitors MUST hold either a BCU 1 Star in Canoeing or a Paddlepower Passport and be able to swim 50 metres in clothing. Copies of canoeing certificates will need to be produced at registration on Friday evening. The WGSCA have offered to run a free pre-qualifying canoeing session on Sat 24 Sept at the Marine Lake, West Kirby for any competitor who hasn’t got the above qualifications, but you will need to book places ASAP for this through Chas Hawkins via email on chas.hawkins1@ntlworld.com. Failing this we recommend you contact either Wirral Guide & Scout Canoe Association
by emailing Chas Hawkins or telephone Waterside Lodge (Tel: 0170-451-0900) should you wish to book introductory Canoeing Training Sessions.
PLEASE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:
·If during the canoeing session ANY competitor is considered to be incompetent by the Organisers they will be withdrawn in the interest of safety.
Also in the interest of safety, any teams who are not correctly equipped for the Hike will be withdrawn. The organisers cannot supply missing or inadequate equipment. All competitors MUST be able to read an OS Map
and use a compass.
·Canoes & buoyancy aids will be provided, but it is the Leader’s responsibility to make sure competitors are suitably dressed.
Every team member will need the use of a bike during their event as teams will ride at the same time.
An Information Booklet giving full rules & details of requirements for each event will be sent to you upon receipt of your
completed Entry Form and full Entry Fees (by cheque please).

Forest Camp, Sandiways, Cheshire

The Beavan Challenge takes place at the Forest Camp, Sandiways in Chishire.

The Camp Site will be available on Friday evening, the Challenge commences on Saturday morning, teams not wishing to camp on Friday evening, will have to arrive early on Saturday morning.
