Need Some Youth Shaped Program Support? Ask Jess!

This blog is a place for leaders from across the County to ask any question relating to YouShape - no question is too silly! All questions, once submitted, will be reviewed by Jess. Once answered, the question and answer will be published anonymously.

Our Youth Commissioner team can also be contacted on email at youth.commissioners@merseysidescouts.com.

My Explorers have planned to hitch hike during an expedition, is there a problem with this?

Hitch hiking is a banned activity for The Scout Association so unfortunately this would not be appropriate for their expedition. The Explorers could do their expedition by foot, cycle, horse, canoe, boat or dinghy.

How do I keep leaders engaged in running Youth Shaped programs?

To start with I would make sure your leader team are aware of what 'YouShape' is and what it entails. Then make sure they are included in the evening you have planned ask your Young People what they would like to do and the ideas they have. Gaining ideas from your Young people makes planning the programme a lot easier for you. This will provide lots of ideas for you to fill your programme with. You could ask the Young People about activities, places to visit, camping, badges and events they would like to do or attend. By asking your YP's what they would like to do it helps them to develop skills for future life. This provides leadership opportunities, new challenges and knowledge of new skills.

My kids want to go to the moon but there isn't enough money in the budget!

What a great question! Well this is all about turning the Young People's ideas around. You could plan to have a night in your own headquarters based on the Space/Astronomer badges. This could include going outside to look at what starts and constellations can be seen above your headquarters or making space rockets out of recyclable materials.
