The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme

Welcome to the D of E section of the Website.
D of E is now an integral part of Scout Programme Training and as such gives everyone in both Explorer and Network sections a chance to gain two prestigious awards at the same time. As you have to do the Award programme to complete your Scout programme of training it seems to me a good idea to make sure you register for the D of E. If your Unit is not doing the Award please contact me and I am happy to call in to explain how it works.

Summer Expeditions
We were pleased to have four groups from Wirral and one from Malpas on expedition this August. The weather was fine for most of the time and all the planned routes were able to go ahead. Martin Smith out for the third time because he was determined to 'do' Snowdon. The weather on both other expeditions had been such that the summit of Snowdon had been out of bounds. He and the rest of his group had planned a very challenging expedition including not just Snowdon but the Glyder ridge and part of the Carneddau as well. Fortunately the weather stayed fair and they completed the lot. Other groups had different challenges, which included things like a days canoeing, skiing (on a dry slope at Plas y Brennan) Mountain Biking and indoor rock climbing. Visits to Electric Mountain, Gelerts Grave and other major tourist attractions took place at various times over the weekend.

New criteria for expeditions now allows participants to decide how they will meet the challenge. For some it will still be a challenging walk, for others it will be an in-depth study of some aspect of life in the mountains, for others it will be a combination of both. The important thing is that each member of each group has a challenge to meet and complete. We felt that all our participants did extremely well. The challenges they set themselves were accepted and completed. The weather stayed fine until Monday morning when we had our first real rain, and this meant that no group had any difficulty in completing their planned activity.
